Patient story
Greetings and salutations to you all. My name is Dean and I have Hirschsprung disease. This disease has been a big challenge for me at both home and school for as long as I can remember. It has brought pain and suffering in my childhood.
Some of the challenges I faced included soiling. At school when I was in primary other children would laugh and point at me behind my back and others at my face. I had a few friends who I thought I could trust and feel comfortable around, but even they sometimes would laugh at me. This led me to lose my trust in them and I only rely on my family who provide me with support and comfort.
When I finished my grade 7 with 16 units, I was a bit happy because I could find a better school with a better environment than I was in during primary level. I asked my parents not to send me to a government school but a primary school instead and they did just that although it was hard on them because of the prohibitive costs.
This condition made me to go to 4 different schools, 2 in primary and 2 in secondary level. The challenges I faced in primary made me a person who does not enjoy the company of other people and enjoy spending time by myself indoors were I do not to worry about people pointing and saying mean things to me. These days I feel better since I have more support from my parents, support group and at church.
